Description: [in 8vo] – pp. (32), 200, (40). Michel de Nostredame (1503–1566) usually latinized
to Nostradamus, was a French apothecary and reputed seer who published collections of
prophecies that have since become famous world-wide. He is best known for his book Les Propheties (The Prophecies), the first edition of which appeared in 1555. Since the publication
of this book, which has rarely been out of print since his death, Nostradamus has attracted
huge interest and an enthusiastic following crediting him with predicting many major world
events. In contrast, most academic sources maintain that the associations made between
world events and Nostradamus’s quatrains are largely the result of misinterpretations or
mistranslations (sometimes deliberate) or else are so tenuous as to render them useless as
evidence of any genuine predictive capability. Nevertheless, interest in the work of this
prominent figure of the French Renaissance is still considerable. The present is a 1689 edition
printed in Cologne based on 2 previous editions Lyon (1644) and Amsterdam (1668). It
includes the life of Michel de Nostradamus and the letter from Nostradamus to his son about
the general meaning and use of his writings beyond the analytical index for the consultation
of quatrains and sixains at the end of the volume. Good Interiors, with moderate foxing and
some spotting more pronounced in some pages, but not disturbing, typical of this editions
and due to the kind of paper used and the normal process of ageing. Woodcut head and tail
pieces in the text with some decorated woodcut initials, copper engraved armorial exlibris on
first pastedown. Contemporary binding in full stiff vellum.
